Os Lusiadas

Canto Primeiro

Stanza 48

  • Both cloths and arms waved
  • Co'os panos e co'os braços acenavam
  • The Lusitanian people, to wait;
  • As gentes Lusitanas, que esperassem;
  • But the light bows were already bowing
  • Mas as proas ligeiras se inclinavam
  • So that the islands abated.
  • Para que junto às ilhas amainassem.
  • People and sailors worked,
  • A gente e marinheiros trabalhavam,
  • As if here the works were finished;
  • Como se aqui os trabalhos se acabassem;
  • They take candles; the high cock is flattened;
  • Tomam velas; amaina-se a verga alta;
  • From the anchor, the wounded sea, on top jumps.
  • Da âncora, o mar ferido, em cima salta.
